IRIDEX Teams with Dr. Philip Fiore to Treat Glaucoma in Grenada
At IRIDEX, we look for opportunities to provide our technology and resources for sight-saving care to some of the world’s most vulnerable populations. Recently, we teamed with Dr. Philip Fiore, a glaucoma specialist in Nutley in New Jersey, to fight glaucoma in the Caribbean island of Grenada. Equipped with the IRIDEX Cyclo G6® Glaucoma Laser System and MicroPulse P3® Glaucoma probes, Dr. Fiore and his team screened over 60 glaucoma patients, scheduled 22 Cyclo G6 laser procedures, and treated 20 patients with our equipment—all of the treated patients experienced good outcomes.
Our Cyclo G6 laser and probes proved valuable tools in this setting by providing the medical team with portable equipment to perform blade-free, simple, and fast procedures. Blade-free treatments with the Cyclo G6 laser system produce fewer complications and reduce follow-up requirements—a necessity for successful outcomes in a region where patient compliance and access to follow-up care is rare.
Armed with our technology, the medical team maximized its humanitarian efforts in Grenada, a country where glaucoma is a serious eye health problem. “There is a high incidence rate, poor follow up, and medication is cost prohibitive and in limited supply. There are few treatment options and even fewer physicians qualified to perform these delicate, complicated procedures. I thank IRIDEX for the generous use of the laser and probes,” said Dr. Fiore.
At IRIDEX, we are proud that our equipment is helping surgeons who care bring light back to glaucoma sufferers more safely, more quickly, and more successfully than ever before.
